Elevators for Sigiriya

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said that the government intends installing electric elevators for the promotion of tourism in Sigiriya adding that this process will be launched soon without harming the archaeology of the site.

It is also intended to use electric motor vehicles for travel around Sigiriya to ensure an environment sans noise and air pollution.

He said the paintings at the historic Dambulla Cave Temple which is a world heritage site are in the process of being destroyed owing to lack of attention and care. The Education Minister has instructed officials to make arrangements at the earliest to begin conservation work on these paintings. Accordingly, the conservation work is to be implemented as a joint project of the Central Cultural Fund and the Department of Archaeology.

In a bid to ease the congestions and other inconveniences to both local and foreign visitors, while purchasing tickets to visit the site an online system for this purpose will also be introduced, he added. Several other facilities have also been planned for tourists and local visitors, he said.
